Automotive Performance Specialist Certificate (071B)

The Automotive Performance Specialist certificate provides an overview of basic automotive skills and terminology. Students will learn definitions of common automotive terms, proper care and use of tools, and safety precautions and procedures in the shop. In addition, the certificate provides a general introduction to automotive components and principles, including the engine, its parts, and their functions. Students will study electrical and electronic fundamentals, measurement devices, electron and current flow, schematic diagram reading, semiconductors, various transistor and their uses, electronic control modules, and dashboard instruments. Also taught are advanced diagnostic and analytical skills that are needed to service today’s high tech, computer-controlled engine management systems properly. Students will learn intake and fuel system design and application, exhaust and emission systems, carburetors, fuel injection, ignition systems and problem diagnosis, computerized engine controls and circuits, and engine performance diagnosis and troubleshooting. Upon completion of this certificate, students will be able to perform the duties usually required of entry-level repair technicians specializing in advanced computer diagnostics. 

 

Graduation Requirements

  1. Total Credit Hours: 19 credit hours in courses numbered 100 and above
  2. Cumulative Grade Point Average: 2.00 (‘C’) or better for all work applicable toward the degree that was completed at Richland
  3. Residency: 10 credit hours or more at Richland Community College
