NURS 216 Maternal-Child Nursing
introduces students to the fundamentals of nursing practice related to maternal health and care of the newborn providing a comprehensive overview conception, pregnancy, birth, and the neonatal period. Concepts of reproduction, family, perfusion, oxygenation, fluids and electrolytes, thermoregulation, grief and loss, nutrition, and comfort will be emphasized. Cultural competence will be applied to health practices of the family. Students will apply the nursing process, critical thinking, nursing judgement, and therapeutic communication to provide safe and effective evidence-based care. Clinical experiences will focus on the childbearing family and newborn care needs and select pediatric experiences. This course is applicable toward all certificates and degrees (credit hours 5.5, lecture hours 3.0, lab hours 5.0).
Prerequisite
completion of NURS 162, NURS 154, NURS 165, and BIOL 202 and completion of or concurrent enrollment in NURS 240, NURS 230, and ENGL 101
