NURS 162 Mental Health Nursing

introduces students to the management of psychiatric and mental health problems in clients across the lifespan. Emphasis is placed on nursing judgement to provide safe and effective care specific to concepts of communication, adaptation, development, emotions, cognition, psychosis, and safety. Students will apply the nursing process, critical thinking, nursing judgement, and therapeutic communication to provide safe and effective evidence-based care for clients with alterations in these concepts. Culture and diversity principles will be fostered. Clinical experiences will focus on needs of clients with psychiatric health problems in acute and long-term care settings throughout the lifespan (early childhood through death). This course is applicable toward all certificates and degrees (credit hours 5.5, lecture hours 3.0, lab hours 5.0).

completion of NURS 110, NURS 111, NURS 115, Psych 110, and BIOL 201, and completion of or concurrent enrollment in NURS 154, NURS 165, and BIOL 202 or admission to the LPN Bridge Program
