2026-2027 Course Catalog

Early Childhood Education

Childcare and preschool teacher assistants and workers play a vital role in the development of children. What children learn and experience during their early years can shape their views of themselves and the world and can affect their later success or failure in school, work, and their personal lives. Teachers and workers in these settings introduce children to mathematics, language, science, social studies, learning in general, and social and behavioral skills.

Richland Community College is entitled by Gateways to Opportunity to offer Early Childhood Education (ECE) Credentials Levels 2, 3, and 4. The ECE Credential Level 2 is aligned with the Basic Certificate, the ECE Credential Level 3 is aligned with the Advanced Certificate, and the ECE Credential Level 4 is aligned with the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. The Gateways to Opportunity ECE Credential recognizes attainment of education and experience standards established by the State of Illinois and prepares students for employment and advancement in early care and educations settings. Students should consult with a Success Coach for information regarding credentials, degree options, and required coursework.
